Privacy Policy

This policy explains how Okkaligar Marriage Information Center (https://okkaligar.in) collects, uses, and protects your personal data. Effective for accounts created on or after this policy's publication. See our Terms of Service for the rules that govern using this platform.

What we collect

To help match you with a compatible partner, we collect:

  • Phone number, birth date, and birth place
  • Religion, caste, sub-caste, and mother tongue
  • Horoscope details: birth place, Rasi, Nakshatra, and Lagnam, required to complete a profile; time of birth, Dosham details, and the birth chart, optional
  • Family details (father's and mother's names, kulam)
  • Education, profession, and income
  • Physical details, and health/disability information if you choose to share it
  • Photos you upload
  • Email address, required for account recovery
  • A device-identifying push notification endpoint, only if you turn on notifications in Settings

How we use it

Solely to power matrimonial matching, search, and the profile detail you and other members see. We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not sell it to third parties. Contact details (phone, email, and other gated fields) are only revealed to another member once their profile has been unlocked on your account, a manual, admin-assigned action, never automatic or self-serve.

Who we share it with

WhatsApp. When you tap "Request via WhatsApp" to ask us to unlock a profile, we send your name, your reference code, and your city to our WhatsApp Business number so our team can identify your request and process payment manually. We never share your phone number, family details, income, or any other gated field this way. This message is processed on WhatsApp/Meta's infrastructure, outside our own systems, once it leaves our platform their own privacy practices apply.

Other members. Your basic profile is visible to compatible matches per your visibility setting. Gated fields (contact details, family details, income) are only shown to a member once their profile has been unlocked on your account, a manual, paid action, never automatic.

How long we keep it

  • Active profiles: retained while your account is active
  • Deleted accounts: personal data erased or anonymized within 30 days of a confirmed deletion request
  • Verification code (OTP) records: purged within 24 hours
  • Audit logs: retained 3 years for accountability and dispute resolution

How we protect it

Access to your data is restricted by row-level security policies at the database layer, not just application-level checks. Data in transit is encrypted (HTTPS/TLS). No system can guarantee absolute security, but we maintain reasonable technical and organizational safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the data we hold, and we review access controls as the platform grows.

Your rights

  • Access a copy of your data from Settings.
  • Request correction of inaccurate personal data by editing your profile, or by contacting us for fields you can't edit yourself.
  • Remove or edit optional profile fields (such as time of birth, Dosham details, the birth chart, or health/physical details) at any time from Edit Profile, and turn off push notifications at any time from Settings.
  • Request account deletion. We erase or anonymize your personal data within 30 days of a confirmed deletion request.

In case of a data breach

If a breach affecting your personal data occurs, we will notify affected users within a reasonable time and take the steps applicable law requires.

Children's privacy

This service is not directed at, and we do not knowingly collect data from, anyone below the legal marriageable age in India (18 for women, 21 for men, see our Terms of Service). If we become aware that we've collected data from someone below that age, we will delete it.

Third-party links and services

Requesting a profile unlock opens WhatsApp, and some links on this site (such as directions to our office) open other third-party services. Once you leave our platform, that third party's own privacy policy applies, we're not responsible for how they handle your data.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the service changes. Material changes (what we collect, why, or who we share it with) will be reflected here with an updated version number at the top of this page, and, where required, we will ask existing users to re-consent.
